LOVE THIS CAR

written by Frank Kauffman

I bought my first car when I was a junior in high school and it was a 1957, black and white, Ford Fairlane 500, 2-door hardtop. I LOVED that car and my memories of drag racing, cruising up and down Lincoln Avenue with my friends was the most important thing to me at that time, other than basketball and track.  Then when I was a senior (1960) I dated a girl named Mary Miller, who was a junior. I still had the 57 Ford and created new and different memories until she dumped me at the end of my senior year.  Well, that was OK because I still had my 57 Ford and that saved my crushed heart.

Over the years (28+) my life took several different turns and my thoughts went back to the 57 Ford and how much fun it would be to find another one.  Here is the kicker to the story:  not only did I find a different 57 Ford, but I also was reunited with my high school sweetheart  (Mary Miller).  We were married in 1988 and just celebrated our 35th anniversary.  Mary and I decided to find “our memory car” and in 2006, we saw a 57 Ford that we liked at an auction in Charlotte, SC.  We sent our son, Troy, to the auction and the car was over our budget but outside the grounds there was a 1957 black, Ford Fairlane 500 2-door hardtop that Troy looked at and BEHOLD.  We bought it, had it shipped to CO, had an off-frame restoration done, have owned it for 17 years and drive it as often as we can.
